Early UK cloth bindings in the Routh Library

[Author’s note. The work to list early cloth bindings in the Routh Library was undertaken in 1998 and 1999. The list of entries and the article & table of results were done later, by 2016. Routh library shelfmarks may have been altered since 1998. This work has not been peer reviewed. Any errors/ omissions are the author’s.]

The Library of Martin Joseph Routh  was bequeathed to the University of Durham on his death in 1854. (Middleton, pp. 253-255)The library comprises some 16,000 volumes, and it reflects Routh’s interests as a learned Divine. Routh purchased many of his books; a number also were given to him by authors and editors. (Middleton p. 256) Judging by the appearance of the library today, Routh did not appear to comission much re-binding of his books in his lifetime. The majority of the books have contemporary bindings in cloth and in leather. This, combined with the relative lack of use of the Library since it was acquired (and therefore the lack of re-binding), gives the Library its distinctive appearance.

To the researcher of early cloth bindings, the viewing of cloth that is fresh in appearance, with the dye colours largely unfaded, is a real attraction. The numbers of books acquired by Routh in his last thirty years means that many examples of similar cloth grains and similar dyes are gathered together.

A small piece of work was undertaken in 1998 to examine the volumes with early cloth bindings. The work concentrated on the examination of volumes published between 1825 and 1840. Whilst much research effort has focused upon the earliest dateable cloth trade binding, the year of 1825 remains a useful starting point. (Carter p. 22) From 1825, the use of cloth to cover boards and text block spread quite rapidly. Of course, the place of publication of a work does not provide definite proof of where the work was bound. In the analysis that follows, the place and date of publication are used as indicative of the probable spread of bookcloth, assuming the binding to be in the same place as the publication. In 1832, gold blocking was first used on the spines of cloth bound books.(Ball p. 18) A number of the books in the Routh Library are early examples of this, showing blocking in blind as well as blocking in gold. Also noteworthy is the continued use during these years of printed labels pasted on spines or on upper covers.

The end date of 1840 (with a few titles being recorded for publications after this date) for the selection of books reflects three changes which occurred at this time. Firstly, the number and variety of grains changed, as the use of cloth grain machines became more systematic. Secondly, the amount of blocking on the covers and on the spines of books increased, possibly as a consequence of the growing confidence of engravers and binders in creating and applying the blocks. Thirdly, it is likelt that fashion changed, reflecting the perceived need by publishers for more sophisticated examples of cloth graining. Many examples of post 1840 publications exist in the the Routh Library. The examination and listing of these volumes was beyond the time available to the author.

The method of examination was straightforward. Books with cloth bindings and an appropriate publication date were taken directly from the shelf and catalogued. Only after carrying out the cataloguing work was it possible to group the cloths by their type and to note cloth covers of particular interest. It is not possible to attach the full entries for all the books catalogued. However, a copy of the entries has been placed with the Routh Library.

From the results in Table 1, we can see that some of the earliest cloths to be used in bookbinding were ungrained. The warp and weft of the cloth clearly show. Dyes of red green and blue were introduced into the cloth. The un grained cloths in the Routh Library group themselves into two categories:smooth finish/gloss and matt. These smooth cloths were still used as covers for books published in the 1830s. Of the grained cloths, there are three types of rib-grain: rib vertical-grain, rib horizontal-grain, rib diagonal-grain. Books are also grained with ‘pebble’-grain, diaper-grain, wave diagonal-grain, sand-grain, ripple-vertical-grain. It is also apparent that many of the bindings of the books in cloth is done near to the date of publication. However, some of these books were bound some years after publication. Of books published in the 1830s, diaper-grain (28 books) and ‘pebble’-grain (22 books) were the most numerous.

 Conclusion

The examples of early cloth bindings in the Routh Library are an uncommon survival. Well over one hundred examples of the use of early cloth dyeing and graining are present, in good condition. These ‘incunables of cloth’, i. e. early publishers/ trade bindings published 1825-1840, provide evidence of the convenience of using cloth for book binding. These are evidence of early use of cloth for bindings, before mass manufacture of books with the use of cloth for edition bindings with increasing cover decoration being executed.
