Early UK cloth bindings in the Routh Library
Edmund M. B. King
@12.4.99 Edited

The Library of Martin Joseph Routh was bequeathed to the University of Durham on
his death in 1854. (Middleton, pp. 253-255)The library comprises some 16,000
volumes, and it reflects Routh’s interests as a learned Divine. Routh purchased
many of his books; a number also were given to him by authors and editors.
(Middleton p. 256) Judging by the appearance of the library today, Routh did
not appear to comission much re-binding of his books in his lifetime. The
majority of the books have contemporary bindings in cloth and in leather. This,
combined with the relative lack of use of the Library since it was acquired
(and therefore the lack of re-binding), gives the Library its distinctive
appearance.
